Chinese firm sells hyper-real, 'always loyal' humanoid robots

Chinese robotics company UBTech has introduced the U1, a full-sized humanoid companion robot that it calls the first ultra-realistic humanoid designed for mass production. The robot has a metal structure covered with lifelike skin and can be customized, for an added cost, to resemble a loved one, celebrity or fictional character through its hair, face and clothing.

UBTech says the U1 uses eye cameras, chest sensors and microphones. Its company-programmed artificial intelligence can hold conversations, detect possible fatigue or stress and offer reassuring responses, while learning about a user over time. The robot can discuss everyday concerns, issue medication reminders, help identify potential health problems and suggest shared activities such as watching a World Cup match.

The basic model costs 119,800 yuan, or $17,600, while an Ultra version with more advanced features costs 990,000 yuan, or $145,700. UBTech says it has received more than 13,300 preorders and expects deliveries to begin in September. It is marketing the product chiefly to single people and adults aged 60 or older, which it describes as large potential markets in China.

The entry-level U1 can move its head, eyes and mouth and has a battery life of up to four hours. It cannot cook or do housework, and UBTech says it is not intended for intimate relationships for now. The company says robot data is encrypted and will not train its AI models.

An analyst cited in the article sees possible value for companion robots in elderly care and mental wellness, but warns that products must avoid the unsettling “uncanny valley” effect. The article also notes broader concerns about privacy, emotional attachment to machines and the still-limited autonomous performance of AI-enabled robots.
