Generative Bionics unveils Gene.01 humanoid with tactile skin

Generative Bionics, a Genoa, Italy-based company, introduced the Gene.01 humanoid for industrial work at AMD Advancing AI 2026. The company said it developed the platform in six months and intends it to underpin a family of customer-specific robots. Its first industrial configuration is linked to shipbuilder Fincantieri for shipyard work, including a welding humanoid intended for complex environments.
Gene.01’s main stated feature is distributed tactile skin covering the body. According to the company, it senses touch, temperature, proximity, and force, supporting collaboration with people by allowing the robot to anticipate their presence and react around contact. Force sensing is also intended to let workers teach tasks by demonstration, including the amount of force needed for actions such as gripping.
Generative Bionics describes its control approach as proprietary physical AI that integrates the body, mechanics, and intelligence. It says the system models both the robot and a human partner to adjust hardware and motion capabilities for considerations including ergonomics and walking stability. The announcement did not provide conventional specifications, including height, weight, payload, battery life, or degrees of freedom.
The company is publishing Gene.01’s robot model for physical-AI developers, maintaining it through PyPI, conda-forge, and the official ROS build farm for use in simulation, AI, and robotics tools. Future versions can be customized through task AI, exterior design, and end effectors such as hands and feet. Named markets include logistics, manufacturing, public safety and inspection, and healthcare.
Generative Bionics is collaborating with Synapticon on an EU-protected actuation stack, European final assembly, calibration, safety testing, and tailored integrated actuators. Spun out of the Italian Institute of Technology in 2024, it raised €70 million in late 2025 for product development, physical-AI training, and its first production plant.
