Photos: First look at J&J’s Ottava surgical robot

Johnson & Johnson MedTech has unveiled Ottava, its surgical robotic system, following FDA de novo authorization. The company describes it as the first soft-tissue robotics system integrated directly into an operating table. Four robotic arms are built beneath the table and can be stowed there when idle. J&J says this configuration requires 30% to 50% less operating-room space than boom-and-cart systems and is intended to reduce setup friction and support clinical workflow.

Software, motors, and sensors coordinate the arms, which can move to predefined procedural positions at the push of a button. According to J&J, automating parts of setup and breakdown is designed to save time, simplify workflows, and make the experience more consistent for surgical teams.

The company highlighted redesigned instruments, including a two-in-one needle driver with surgeon-activated modes for cutting only or suturing only. J&J cited a survey in which 83% of surgeons said they experienced at least one unintended suture cut each month during robotic surgery. It also introduced end scissors using a patented design intended to preserve blade alignment and deliver a consistent, complete cut, including when surgeons use the distal third of the jaw for small bites in sharp dissection. J&J referenced a separate survey reporting that 98% of surgeons had encountered dull or poorly cutting monopolar scissors.

Ottava’s console is designed to let surgeons sit upright while accessing the full workspace. J&J said its posture and controls are intended to limit eye and neck strain and convey precise movements; users can save settings linked to their console login. Like the company’s Monarch bronchoscopy system, Ottava connects to the Polyphonic digital ecosystem for procedure-data collection, training, collaboration, and research. Initial indications include a range of general surgery procedures, such as gastric bypass, gastrectomy, gallbladder removal, appendectomy, and hiatal hernia repair.
