The Real Bottleneck in Low-Code MES Software isn’t the Code

The article argues that the central challenge in low-code manufacturing execution systems is not writing applications, but integrating factory equipment and turning machine signals into usable production context. Rockwell Automation’s July 2026 survey of 1,560 manufacturing decision-makers found that 93% use MES software, while only 28% use it enterprise-wide and 23% report full integration with ERP, PLM, quality, and operational technology systems. Although the survey is vendor-produced, the article says its figures illustrate that adoption has advanced further than enterprise-scale integration.
It notes that MES was defined as configurable in a 1997 MESA paper because plant requirements differ. At ISA-95 Level 3, scheduling and execution involve difficult, site-specific decisions, unlike lower-level predefined control operations. The article concludes that shipped modules may simplify standard needs, but complex customization, traceability models, version control, and long-term maintainability require evidence beyond marketing claims.
